Towards Mictlan [1]

A huge
man is running across the stone-arch bridge
with a diminutive leashed dog

Intensely black
(he is obsidian)
the dog has no face

There is a mirror in its place

[1] The place where those who die of “natural causes” rest after life, according to the ancient Mexica

JUANITA GARCIAGODOY was born and raised bilingual, binational, and bicultural in Mexico City by a father from Guadalajara and a mother from Minnesota. She published _Digging the Days of the Dead_ in 1994 while teaching in Macalester College’s Spanish Department. Garciagodoy is married to novelist George Rabasa, and they live, write, run, and walk within sight of the dark and changing Mississippi River.
